In the modern world, I type way more than I write. Does handwriting even matter anymore? After researching and experimenting, here's my take on balancing both.
Handwriting matters because:
Find what works for your goals. For me, 70% typing, 30% handwriting keeps skills sharp without burnout.
Handwriting matters because:
- It builds deeper character memory through muscle memory
- You understand stroke order and character structure
- In exams, you still need to write by hand
- Calligraphy and cultural appreciation require handwriting
- It's how we communicate daily (WeChat, email)
- You can produce longer texts faster
- Pinyin typing reinforces pronunciation
- Even native Chinese type more than they write
- Learn characters with handwriting (stroke order, radicals)
- Practice daily with 10-15 minutes handwriting
- Use typing for longer compositions, messages, notes
- Review handwritten characters regularly
Find what works for your goals. For me, 70% typing, 30% handwriting keeps skills sharp without burnout.
