Why is mental health care so hard to find in Texas?

I've been struggling with anxiety this semester and finally tried to find a therapist. The wait list at my school's counseling center is eight weeks. EIGHT.

The Texas policy report says that "38 percent of young Texans reported difficulty accessing mental health services, the highest rate among all of YI's surveyed states" . That's not just me. That's like... thousands of us.

Even when services exist, young people deal with "insurance complexity, narrow provider networks, and months-long wait times that make care functionally inaccessible" . So people end up "forgoing treatment entirely, or relying on emergency and crisis services rather than consistent, ongoing care."

I don't want to wait until I'm in crisis. I need help now. Has anyone found affordable therapy in Texas that doesn't require waiting forever? Please share your secrets. 😰

The "relying on emergency services instead of consistent care" part of that report hit hard. That's exactly what happened to me. Waited too long, ended up in the ER because I couldn't cope. Don't let it get there. Have you looked into online therapy options? Some take insurance and have way shorter waits than in-person. Still not ideal but better than nothing.
